Noise Map / Carte des Bruits
This map emerged from repeated explorations of Dorchester Square in Montreal. Unable to hear myself clearly, I wondered: what does noise obscure? Rather than answer directly, I documented noise as a thematic layer of my doctoral research on the square's soundscape. My approach was inspired by Hildegard Westerkamp, who laments the loss of natural soundscapes yet questions if accepting noise is inevitable.
Created with accessibility in mind, illustrated noise sources around the square each reveal field recordings and research fragments. The map supports screen-readers, keyboard navigation, and includes audio narration and a live waveform visually illustrating noise levels.
Commissioned by Dr. Eldad Tsabary for the RISE project on cataclysmic scenarios, the crisis of noise persists.
